    25/40Gbit/s ETHERNET - LINK CLASS I

Permanent and Channel Link Cat. 8.1 Solution

Permanent and channel link class I

The increasing numbers of mobile devices lead permanently to the requirement for higher data rates in networks. These devices often collect and generate data e.g. like sensors and provide them or they are receiving data and visualise them. This change is often the root cause for data center structural architecture and the corresponding backbone networks to be modernised as they do not fulfil the requirements with a 10 GBASE-T (10 gigabit/s ethernet) solution. The IEEE organisation has developed the ethernet solutions of 25 GBASE-T (25 gigabit/s ethernet) and 40 GBASE-T (40 gigabit/s ethernet) and given an answer with this to the problem. The requirement regarding the attenuation budget to a single component is much higher as compared to the 10 GBASE-T standard. This is the reason why the total length of a channel link is 30 meters in maximum – typically realised with a 24 meters permanent link and two patch cords each side in 3 meters length. A category 8 solution is obviously designed for data centers and server rooms or switch to switch connections.

Category 8 – What differences are between cat. 8.1 and cat. 8.2?

Generally the category 8 is specified by the standardisation committee ANSI/TIA in the USA. Based on this the two international oriented standardisation committees ISO (Internation Organisation of Standardisation) and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) specified two worldwide applicable versions: the category 8.1 and category 8.2. The backwards compatibility to the connector face of category 6A, 6 and 5 acc. to ISO/IEC 11801 and EN 50173 is only given by a cat. 8.1 solution. On the other hand a cat. 8.2 solution allows different connector faces according to the standard which are not all mechanically compatible to each other. Therefore the connector faces are backwards compatible to the category 7A and 7 and the specified reserve capacity of a cat. 8.2 component is higher.

Summarisation cat. 8.1:

  • mechanically compatible with RJ45
  • backwards compatible with cat. 6A, 6 and 5
  • component performance: slightly lower than cat. 8.2
  • class name: link class I

Summarisation cat. 8.2:

  • mechanically not compatible with RJ45
  • backwards compatible with cat. 7A, 7
  • component performance: slightly higher than cat. 8.1
  • class name: link class II

CAT 8 SYSTEM - THE TKM SOLUTION

The TKM cabling system is a category 8.1 solution and consequently backwards compatible to the categories 6A, 6 and 5. As all the single components are directly available customer make-to-order production can as soon as possible be started and the permanent links or copper harnesses (multi-link solution) can be delivered. On the other hand single products to terminate links onsite can be delivered directly es stock. Ordering factory made permanent link products incl. measurement protocol is recommended as this is a time saving and highly safety bringing solution for the installation process – potentially the measurement of the network before commissioning can be dropped and costs can be saved.
